Grand Rapids man identified in crash near Whitehall
News

WHITEHALL, Mich. (WZZM) - The second driver involved in a fatal wrong-way crash on US-31 on August 11th has been positively identified.

Forensic scientists at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing determined that Erik James Flood, 26, of Grand Rapids died while driving on US-31 northbound when his car was hit by Mindy Elizabeth Young-Ostling, 29, driving southbound on the wrong side of the highway.  Young-Ostling was also killed.

Flood was not able to be positively identified until scientists used DNA from a relative.

Investigators say that Flood's headlights were off at the time of the crash, which took place in the early morning hours near Whitehall.  Toxicology reports on both Young-Ostling and Flood are still pending.

Because both drivers were killed in the crash, criminal charges are unlikely.
