WHITEHALL, Mich.—The people behind the West Michigan Water Trail project will hold a public meeting Wednesday afternoon to gather community ideas in how to expand the intiative to include inland sites like lodging, camping, restaurants and convenience store.

The West Michigan Water Trail website reads:

“Recognizing that watersports are not only communal and athletic but also commercial endeavors–that paddlers are also patrons–is vital to anticipating and monitoring the ripple effects of geotourism. This initiative hopes to illustrate the current state of non-motorized activity in the Great Lakes and propel management of ongoing use in a way that is environmentally and economically responsible.”

The research project is funded by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Coastal Zone Management Program.  The West Michigan Water Trail initiative complements a series of other projects this year documenting assets for the water trail.

The public meeting begins at 5 p.m. on Feb. 5 at the White Lake Community Library in Whitehall.
