MUSKEGON, Mich.—Earth Day is April 22, but Muskegon County conservation groups are spending eight days raising awareness while helping the environment.

Muskegon Area Earth Week began April 19 and runs through April 27.  This year’s events include a guided hike if Five Lakes Nature Preserve, rain barrel, sustainable gardening, and hydroponics workshops,  hazardous waste and medication collection, beach day clean-ups and an Earth Fair.  Nearly all of the events are free.  The detailed schedule is as follows:

 

Rain Barrel Workshop

Tuesday, April 22, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

The West Michigan Environmental Action Council, in partnership with The Muskegon Conservation District, Muskegon County and a grant from the Environmental Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, will provide low cost rain barrels to West Michigan homeowners through regularly scheduled workshops. The average rain barrel will keep 1,815 gallons of storm water out of our lakes and rivers each year. Water that can be safely used to irrigate your lawn or garden.

 $20 (includes barrel)

The Earth Fair is a great opportunity to learn more about sustainability efforts in our community.  There will be giveaways, free games, and product demonstrations for a fun learning experience for all!
