Restaurant employee accused of stealing customer credit card information

FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich.—A Taco Bell employee will face charges for using a customer’s credit card information to make purchases throughout the Muskegon County area.

On Jan. 10, officers say the suspect was working the drive through window at the Fruitport Township Taco Bell at 5425 Blueberry Lane when they took a customer’s credit card and copied down the information on it.  The employee then returned the card to the customer.

Police say the suspect presented a faulty credit card at businesses.  When the card was declined, the suspect would offer to call the credit card company to straighten things out.  The suspect would then present the handwritten account number, saying the credit card company provided that information to complete the transaction.

The Taco Bell customer saw the suspicious transactions listed on their account and contacted police, who tracked the crimes to the employee. At this point, police say the crimes appear to be involving just one employee, and Taco Bell managers are being very cooperative. Officers are asking people who may have recently used a credit card at the Fruitport Taco Bell to check their account activity.  Any suspicious transactions can be reported to police by calling (231) 865-8477.

This case is being forwarded to the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office for criminal charges
