Great Lakes Kite Festival Returns

The State Park in Grand Haven comes to life with incredible kite performances this weekend. Don’t miss the fun!

For the 28th year, the world’s best kite flyers - individuals, pairs & teams will be performing continuously on Saturday, May 21 from 10am – 5pm & Sunday, May 22 from 11am – 5pm.

Kite enthusiast and their families are invited to experience different size kites with amazing capabilities controlled by professional kite handlers. There will also be an Open Flying Field to fly your own kite.

There is fun for the whole family, Thursday evening!

The Montague/Whitehall Police Departments invite the community to bring your own helmet to receive a free t-shirt and take part in a lot of door prize giveaways. Individuals have the chance to test their skills on the obstacle course, along with taking a guided tour with a Bike Patrol Officer and enjoy free refreshments of hotdogs, popcorn & pop!

Venture out to the Montague Fire Station located at 5085 Wilcox Street in Montague to enjoy this evening of fun from 5:30pm though 7:30pm on Thursday, May 19!

The Bluegrass Gathering Music Festival, May 19-22

Ocean County Fairgrounds comes alive this week, Thursday through Sunday!

Rain or shine, there is musical fun for everyone! Along with the main stage bands & activities, families can experience individual days of activities. Friday, showcases local bands & jamming starting at noon. Saturday is packed with a Youth Showcase, a band scramble, amazing mainstage music, workshops, children’s activities & more. And free to the public on Sunday at 9:30am, all will gather together for a community church service with bluegrass Gospel songs.

Free Fishing Weekend Coming Up

For the Valentine’s weekend, it’s a free fishing weekend for residents and out of state visitors.

All fishing license fees are waived for two days in Michigan, February 13 & 14 from 6:00am – 10:00pm. This allows fishing enthusiasts to enjoy the chance to catch all types of fish on both inland and Great Lakes’ waters during their respective open season. Just remember that all regulations still apply.

It's Vacation Bible School Time Again

“Journey off the Map” is the name of the Vacation Bible School session activities this summer at Berrean Church in Muskegon, MI.

Bible School runs July 19 – 23 at the Church, located at 635 Seminole Rd. in Muskegon. Activities include games, crafts, music, snacks, teaching and worship rally.

Meekhof Welcomes Constituent to Memorial Day Service

Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, R – West Olive, welcomed a local constituent, Ms. Charlotte Nelis to the State of Michigan Senate Memorial Day service, held yesterday on the Senate floor in Lansing and hosted by the honorable Senator Patrick Colbeck.

“It was a blessing to have Ms. Nelis join me for the service,” said Meekhof. “It is important that we never forget the sacrifices made by Ms. Nelis, Sgt. Seif and the rest of their family and friends.”

Ms. Nelis’s son, Staff Sgt. Andrew Seif, was one of the seven marines and four soldiers killed in a helicopter crash while conducting a night training mission in Florida recently.

Grand Haven High School among Top Schools in the U.S.

U.S. News and World Report has awarded Grand Haven High School the prestigious Silver Medal ranking in the latest “America’s Best High Schools” results released on Tuesday.

Out of 21,000 High Schools, GHHS ranked in the top five percent of all high schools in the U.S. In Michigan, they ranked 32nd out of 862 high schools, including charter and magnet schools, placing them in the top four percent.

Tracy Wilson, Principal at GHHS, said “We are extremely proud of our students and the staff for again attaining this accomplishment. This award demonstrates that we continue to have a program of excellence on a state-wide and national level. The ranking also affirms the K – 12 teaching staff, parents and community.”

Superintendent Keith Konarska said, “This ranking validates what we know to be true, that our district is one of the premier districts in the country. This is another great day for our school district.”
