My Town: Fish for free June 7 and 8

MUSKEGON, Mich.— Grab a rod and head out onto the big lake this weekend for Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend.

On June 7 and 8, the state will be waiving fishing license fees.  Free Fishing Weekend applies to residents and out-of-state visitors on inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish.  All fishing regulations still apply.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, our state offers some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world, with more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, more than 11,000 inland lakes and tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams. To find inland lakes in your area, click here.

My Town Whitehall: Memorial Day parade May 26

WHITEHALL, Mich.—The City of Whitehall will pay tribute to veterans this Memorial Day with their own parade.

The procession will begin at 10:30 a.m. at City Hall and continue to Covell Park.  The event is free and open to all community members.

My Town: Montague and Whitehall police host Bike Safety Rodeo May 20

MONTAGUE, Mich.—  Montague and Whitehall police departments are putting a fun spin on this National Bicycle Safety Month.

Both departments will host the 15th annual Bike Safety Rodeo this Tuesday, May 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Those who wear their own helmet to this family friendly event will receive a free T-shirt.  Visitors can also enter to win door prizes, including a new bicycle.  There will also be free pop, popcorn and hot dogs.

The Bike Safety Rodeo will take place at the Montague Fire Station, located at 5085 Wilcox Street.

My Town: Dozens of companies hiring at Veterans Job Fair May 16

MUSKEGON, Mich.—Approximately 90 businesses will be looking for employees during the Muskegon Veterans Job Fair this Friday, May 16.

The hiring event will take place on the U.S.S. LST 393 Veterans Museum Ship, docked at 560 Mart Street in Muskegon.  This is the third year for the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Job openings range from engineering to grocery store cashiers.  Participating businesses include:

WHITEHALL, Mich.-- Students of Whitehall Schools will showcase their talents for the community to enjoy on May 14 from 7 p.m.  to 8 p.m.

This entertaining evening takes place at The Heartland Health Care Center located at 916 E. Lewis Street in Whitehall.

My Town: Celebrating mom on a budget this Mother's Day

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich.--  Mother’s Day is this weekend and Muskegon County businesses and organizations have some free and inexpensive ways to help you celebrate.

On May 10, children and teenagers who visit Walker Memorial Library in North Muskegon can create a pot filled with flowers for mom for free.  The pots, dirt and flowers will be provided from 10:30 a.m. to noon.  For more information, call (231) 744-6080.

Children in Muskegon can also harness their artistic skills for mom at Hackley Library on May 10.  From 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the library will be hosting Mother’s Day Crafts for Kids.

My Town GR North: Students bring history to life with 'wax museum'

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Students at Knapp Charter Academy are bringing a history lesson to life with a creative take on the traditional wax museum.

On Thursday, May 1, fifth grade students will pretend to be figures in a Revolutionary War wax museum.  Each time a visitor drops a quarter into their bucket, the students will “come to life” and talk about their role in the era.  The presentation puts a fun and interactive spin on history, while raising money for a class trip ti Michigan's Adventure at the end of the year.

The “wax museum” will be open from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Knapp Charter Academy, located at 1759 Leffingwell Ave. NE.
