Saginaw native and ArtPrize participant Lester A. White makes his White Lake debut this month. An opening reception is 5-7 p.m., February 12, at the Arts Council of White Lake’s new building, 106 E. Colby Street, Whitehall. White’s exhibit, called Superior Innovations, remains on display through February 27.

“I’m exploring new ideas, a new style of art work,” said White. Long known for his portraits, he’s now drawn to abstracts, applying acrylics to canvas in the new genre. “I wanted to push to get more creative.”

My Town: Optimists recognize top students; offer cash prizes for contests

On January 28 and February 4, 2015, Mona Shores Optimist Club members celebrated the successes of area high school students with a recognition luncheon at Baker College. Two students from each of the 14 Muskegon Area high schools were honored for their academic success and for best reflecting the Optimist Creed. The creed charges members to expect only the best, wear a cheerful countenance, forget the mistakes of the past, and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

The students briefly shared their accomplishments and plans for the future, followed by a speech from Baker College President Lee Coggin on January 28, and Baker College Business Department Chair Tim Stein on February 4. At the close of the luncheon, each student was awarded a gold keychain and certificate.

My Town: Tech Center students earn top spots at Business & Technology Challenge

MUSKEGON, Mich. (Muskegon ISD)-- Students from the Muskegon Area Career Tech Center (MACTC) Computer Aided Design and Internet, Network & Security Technologies programs earned top-three spots during the annual Business & Technology Challenge sponsored by Baker College.

The event, which took place on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, hosted more than 150 students from nine schools in Michigan.

CAD students from the MACTC demonstrated success in the AutoCAD and Drafting & Design events by earning the following awards:

My Town Whitehall: Local Navy Commander receives prestigious leadership award

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The 34th annual Vice Adm. James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award ceremony was held Dec. 4, in the Pentagon Hall of Heroes in Washington, D.C.

 

 Cmdr. Thomas J. Dickinson, a Whitehall, Michigan, native and Cmdr. Gavin Duff, of Toms River, New Jersey, received the award.

 

 The award recognizes two commissioned officers in pay grade of commander (O-5) or below who contributed to Navy leadership improvement. Stockdale was a recipient of the Medal of Honor and the annual event is held in the room that honors all of the Medal of Honor recipients across the services.

 

 Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert served as guest speaker at the ceremony and presented the awards to the winners. Greenert received the award himself in 1992.

Fall Harvest Ballroom Dance

The Commons of Evergreen present the Fall Harvest Ballroom Dance with music by Pacific Lite on Saturday, October 11th from 7 - 10pm.  Admission is $10 for a Commons member and $15 for Non-members.
