GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--- Consumers in West Michigan are more optimistic about what 2015 will bring.

In fact, consumers in this market are the most optimistic in the region, according to a new study released by Huntington Bank.  The financial firm found local residents say they are much more likely to buy a new vehicle this year; 17 percent said they plan to purchase a new car, compared to just four percent in 2014.

Home improvement stores may also be busy; 47-percent of West Michiganders surveyed for the Huntington Bank Midwest Economic Index said they were planning some home renovations for 2015, compared to 32 percent in 2014.

WALKER, Mich.—  A Walker-based retail store is hiring thousands more workers ahead of the holiday season.

Meijer recently announced it plans to hire more than 10,000 additional employees for stores in five states. Nearly half of the new hires, approximately 4,800 people, will happen in Michigan. The additional employees are needed to cover duties newly opened stores, as well as the upcoming busy holiday shopping season.  Meijer opened or is opening nine new stores in 2014; the retailer plans to open additional locations in 2015.

The openings will be for a variety of positions, from cashiers to meat cutting.  The majority of positions will be part time and seasonal.  Interested candidates can apply online on Meijer’s website

Meijer currently operates 213 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.

My Town Whitehall: Library hosts used book sale Aug. 21-23

WHITEHALL, Mich.—Load up on books before heading back to school during White Lake Community Library’s Used Book Sale this week.

Visitors can shop the book bargains at White Lake Community Library Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Other items on sale include CDs, DVDs, VHS and puzzles.  The library will also hold a silent auction for the Dept. 56 collector’s item from the Snow Village series, titled “Jefferson School.”

Sale hours are as follows:

  • Aug. 21, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Aug. 22, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Aug. 23, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

My Town Montague: District auctions off school equipment

MONTAGUE, Mich.—Montague Area Public Schools is cleaning out its closet to help cover future bills.

Now through 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, the district is auctioning off non-essential equipment to raise additional funding for the upcoming school year.  Woodworking equipment, a 1954 Ford 2000 tractor, compressor, score boards, tables, chairs, desks and cafeteria equipment are among the items up for bid.  You can find the entire inventory on Orbitbid.com, which is hosting the online auction.

My Town Whitehall: Community-wide Garage Sale returns June 21

WHITEHALL, Mich.—  Thrift-seekers will fill Whitehall this weekend as the Community-wide Garage Sale returns for a fourth year.

On Saturday, June 21, all residents are encouraged to hold a garage sale between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  The city waives its normal $1 garage sale fee.  Shoppers can pick up a map of garage sale locations at City Hall, the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, the White Lake Beacon and the White Lake Community Library beginning Monday, June 16.

My Town: Muskegon YMCA White Elephant Sale returns May 9-10

MUSKEGON, Mich.--  Thrifty shoppers can shop for deals while helping children go to camp during the Muskegon YMCA’s White Elephant Sale, starting Friday May 9.

The two-day sale will include a variety of gently used household items and clothing.  The sale will take place at Folkert Community Hub, 640 Seminole Road, Norton Shores.  For a $5 donation, early birds will be allowed in at 8 a.m. Friday; the general public can shop from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10.

Proceeds from the White Elephant Sale will go to the YMCA and Camp Pendalouan in Montague, to finance camp scholarships for children.

My Town Whitehall: 2014 White Lake Area Visitors Guide now available

WHITEHALL, Mich.—The 2014 White Lake Area Visitors Guide is officially out.

The White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce has had 50,000 copies of the guide printed.  The copies will be delivered to area businesses over the next couple weeks for patrons to pick up.  The guide is also available online here.

The 40-page guide includes a list of this year’s events, area entertainment and attractions, recreational and travel accommodations, businesses, and a map of local parks, trails and boat launches.
